Creating 8.5×11 Digital Layouts with 12×12 Digital Scrapbook Paper

Scrap Girls has a line of products designed for making digital scrapbook layouts in 8.5×11-inch format. When I first started digital scrapbooking, I had software that almost exclusively worked in notebook-sized format. As a result, I have notebook after notebook of 8.5×11-inch layouts from my early digital scrapbooking days.

Back in 2007 when I discovered Scrap Girls, I quickly learned that everyone was working with 12×12-inch layouts. As I was a newbie and wanting to learn everything I could about digital scrapbooking and Photoshop, I switched to 12×12-inch layouts. As a result, almost five years later, you can imagine how many wonderful and creative 12×12 collections I have gathered up!

You may be wondering if there is an easy way to work with all of your 12×12 collections in the 8.5×11 format. Good news: It really is easy to make a layout in the new format using any of your existing collections! Simply browse the 8.5×11 product section of the Boutique. There you will find an amazing array of beautiful paper templates for borders, textures, and patterns. Using these in tandem with any of your 12×12 digital scrapbooking collections that you have purchased will help you create a whole new album full of 8.5×11 layouts!

Let's get started and I'll show you how.

First, open up a new 8.5×11-inch document. Today, I am designing mine to be horizontal. Now select your 12×12 paper of choice and open it within your workspace.

While holding the Shift key and having the Move Tool selected, drag your 12×12 paper onto your 8.5×11 document. This will place the paper on your new layout. See the outline of the 12×12 paper? It is larger than your layout. This gives you the advantage of being able to select the part of the 12×12 paper that you want to show on your layout. While still having the Move Tool selected, you can click and hold on the 12×12 paper on your layout and position it to your liking. You can center it or have it to one side or the other. I enjoy this step because I can select my favorite part of the 12×12 paper to show on my layout.

Now, find your 8.5×11 paper template. The Scrap Girls Boutique is loaded with all kinds of paper templates that you can use to create borders, textures, and designs. Open your template of choice. The next step is to simply drag your paper template onto your layout. If you are working on a horizontal layout like I am, use the Transform commands to rotate the template 90 degrees. You will see that it fits perfectly on your layout and makes a wonderful border.

Now, use the template as a clipping mask as I did here with yet another 12×12 paper. You can do this by highlighting both layers and hitting Ctrl+Alt+G. You could also add a style or a blending mode to the paper template layer to create another look to your own special paper. Your 12×12 paper has been magically transformed to an 8.5×11 paper!

Now decorate and embellish your layout as normal, and you will have a wonderful 8.5×11 layout to admire, share, and enjoy. All of your 12×12 digital scrapbooking collections that you have purchased can be used in tandem with any of the 8.5×11 line of paper templates! You will be excited to discover that the size of the collection that you have purchased does not limit your size options for your layouts!
